Tackling
SDG #4 Quality Education, SDG #10 Reduced Inequality
Role
Governor of Jakarta, Former Minister of Education and Culture of Indonesia
Contribution
As the Governor of Jakarta, Mr Baswedan initiated a school meal program for Jakarta’s schoolchildren, starting with 144,000 students in 459 schools. He is the founder of Indonesia Mengajar, a program that selects, trains, and assigns university graduates to serve in a one-year teaching mission across the country. With the goal to fill a shortfall in the number of qualified teachers in the country, the program also shapes a new generation of leaders who understand the needs of rural communities. For his role in advancing education in rural areas of Indonesia, Baswedan received in 2010 the PASIAN Education Award from the Association of Social Solidarity for Pacific Countries (PASIAD), Turkey.
